More than just a Bike Ride, it’s ‘SOLAR SYSTEM’ CYCLE – YORK 2010
Some years ago, Robin Dunn and his daughters, Philippa and Katie, set off on The Goodies’ famous tandem leading off the very first of the successful Hungerford Big Wheel events to raise funds for the work of Children in Distress caring for infants and children living with HIV and AIDS.
In our twentieth year of operation, Children in Distress has taken a “leap of faith” and, as part of the York Cycle Show, will mount its second sponsored bike ride to be held on York’s Knavesmire Racecourse on Saturday, June 19, 2010 waving off at 10.00am.
There will be something for everyone with family entertainment, camping and food facilities available throughout the day. Our aim is to offer a great a day for all the family at the Big Wheel event and to attract many regular supporters, as well as gather in new ones.
This will be more than just another sponsored bike ride as we aim to raise funds to repair the damage to St Laurence Independent Living Centre in Cernavoda. This highly regarded independent living programme teaches all the skills that a young person brought up in an institution needs for an independent life, personal hygiene, domestic skills, cooking, self confidence and the independence that even the most well meaning institution never provide. So much so that the Secretary of State for Disabled People has tabled a plan to close another HIV residential centre in nearby Constanta and transfer a new generation of body positive young people to swell our little community.
The Commercial Bank of Romania has offered to consider matched funding grant to help carry out the essential redevelopment work, however unless we can meet their grant conditions the future for the young people and the home they depend on is bleak.
If you would like take part in The Solar System Cycle or can help the young people of St Laurence Independent Living Centre have future and a life worth leading, please contact Isabel Davis on 0141 559 5695 or Isabel.firstname.lastname@example.org
