Top StoryKeyworth Charity Coffee ShopJanet Woodiwiss, Jean Dunthorne and Bernie Boultby A decade of service to their Community and Children in Distress
Every Thursday morning for the last ten years the URC Church Hall in Keyworth, Nottingham has resounded to laughter, the tinkle of tea cups and satisfied sighs of happy and replete customers. It has been a haven for the community and lucky customers of the Children in Distress coffee shop, who readily enjoy great company, the banter, superb home baking and the best tea and coffee in the area, all for a good cause.
Bernie Boultby, who started the coffee shop spends Wednesday in the kitchen preparing some of the best home baking you can imagine and she is ably assisted by a dedicated team of friends and helpers in Janeth Fairholm, Jean Dunthorne and Janet Woodiwiss who happily serve coffee and teas to their committed and regular customers.
Taken to the heart to the Keyworth community, this wonderful friendly little coffee shop like Topsy has just “growed and growed” Over the years the team have raised thousand pounds using some of the monies raised to purchase Christmas presents, pyjamas, duvets and bed linen for St Laurence Children’s, Cernavoda, they donated a commercial washing machine to St Margaret's Hospice and Children’s Centre, Bucharest and assisted in funding a number much needed surgical operations for children in the charity’s hospices.
The Coffee Shop has dual role, providing a successful community service whilst promoting the work of Children in Distress. It has a warm friendly atmosphere and an ever open door where people can spend a little time relaxing with friends and enjoying the very best a coffee shop can offer.
As Bernie says “We keep the cost down to only 30p per item but '90% of the customers always pay more than needed to such a worthy cause. We help where we can. I do find the ‘Gift s for the Heart’ gift catalogue great help as when we have monies to spend the customers can see what their generosity has achieved” .
If you want to know more just call in and ask for Bernie you will have the warmest of welcomes and a great cup of tea. |
