Top StoryScotland’s Busy Knitting BeesPhoto collage of the team Mrs Dunbar, Maxwell, Black, Cameron , Walker, McTaggart, Barbour and Rollo They are a busy little group, the ladies of Kirkintilloch and Milton of Campsie just north of Glasgow, who over the past four years, seem to have knitted constantly for the children in Children in Distress’s hospices and community projects. Their knitting has often been made possible because of the generosity of others donating wool or giving the money to buy it. Liz Barbour, Nan Rollo and Pat McTaggart have produce everything from knitted baby’s, children’s and toddler’s clothes to blanket squares whilst Mary Dunbar, a spritely 92 years old has knitted premature baby clothes for Romanian infants for decades and continues her good work now through Children in Distress.
Barbara Maxwell is also greatly indebted to Eleanor Cameron another faithful and stalwart knitter for the way she has worked as part of the team over the past few years but sadly ill heath for has finally forced her to put down her needles.
Barbara speaking on behalf of this dynamic knitting and collection team which includes her niece, Lilian Black and Betty Walker who have themselves energised many of their friends and neighbours to knitting away, as well as donating children clothing and nearly 300 teddies to bring comfort as well as warmth, said “ We are absolutely delighted with the support received from all of our talented handcrafters, knitters and donors in the area without them there would be lots of sad and cold children and we would never have achieved so much, they are our inspiration”.
If you can help Barbara and her team or would like to follow her example in you are why not contact Jane Russell and talk about the charity’s Handcrafters Guild call 01751 432089 or email janerussell@childrenindistress.org.uk
