Constantin Nicholescu in better days Children in Distress tries never to be involved in party politics particularly in Romania where it’s an especially byzantine and murky business but we share the story of Constantine Nicolescu, President of Arges County, without whom St Andrew’s Hospice, Pitesti would not exist, who for many years has been solid friend and supporter of Children in Distress and the incurably and terminally ill children in its care. Before entering politics, Constantine Nicolescu, delivered commercial success to Dacia Motors in Romania worked in senior executive roles for Renault in France and for two years was a leading Senator and parliamentarian. As President of the Council he bought professionalism, flair and business expertise to the running of Arges Council where he delivered for rich and poor alike improved employment, education and cultural facilities council services, housing, utilities, roads, social welfare, and quality of life across the County. One of a family of 11, born in the village of Mihaiesti in Arges, he is a much respected man of principle and real man of the people so the County's Social Democrat Party (PDSR) under his leadership reaped electoral reward in the polls. Earlier this month Constantine was arrested on charges of corruption, this gentle man was handcuffed and huckled from the County Council Headquarters before especially primed press and media. He was treated as a common criminal, refused bail and slung in prison to await trial. The charges?-peddling influence and benefitting the Orthodox Church in Arges. It might be suggested that being unable to win at the ballot box those in power had decided to bring down this man of integrity and standing as a warning to others in his party; a tactic that harkens back to the dark days of the late forties when the Communists acted in similar ways to stifle democracy and seize power. The stress was just too much and after a heart attack a massive stroke, and delayed quadruple bypass operation Constantine Nicolescu lays detained in a guarded hospital room seeing only his closest family. We can only surmise the truths of this sad tale, but a good man who helped set up St Andrew’s Hospice, who had demonstrate that he cares for the children who need it and who has sustained the hospices and clinic's nursing and therapy services now needs the prayers and support of friends across the world. If you have time please mention him in your prayers or at least remember Constantine Nicolescu a friend of “children in distress” who is now "in need of friends indeed".
