The lazy, crazy, days of summer

A Bigger Splash  can be cool

Despite the occasional respite of a cooling thunderstorm, Bucharest is sweltering in the summer sun, for days on end; it has been searingly hot at 103°in the shade. The city’s ambulances and the Red Cross emergency tents set up in its streets are doing a roaring trade sweeping up those who have collapsed from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. To help those Bucharestii living in flats without air conditioning but still desperately looking to cool down, public swimming pools have been opened 24 hours a day to offer respite in the evening and even the long hot and sticky hours of the night.

For the children and care staff in the charity’s Bucharest hospice, cooling relief comes by way the morning joy of the splashing in their garden’s paddling pool; or basking in the shade catching the slightest breeze. Their garden is tented and its shade and tinkling fountain cools the air often soothing even the most fractious.

Fortunately, when the hospice’s wards were upgraded air conditioning units were installed and these are run in the mornings so that children return to cooled wards for their afternoon siestas. Some of the children are so frail, that even running air conditioning whilst they sleep would compromise their breathing and put them at risk, so it is only run when the children are safely at play or at rest in the garden.

All of this puts enormous pressure on the hospices already over stretched utility budget but as a children’s palliative care hospice St Margaret’s puts its children first. However we now seek a little summer only sponsorship to help in this emergency to save and change lives. If you would like to be “cool” and  help sponsor an  hour’s restful sleep for the children in our care, please call Alisdair Barron on 0141 559 5695 or contact him at
