Top StoryHungerford’s Big Wheel at 14Cycling in the sum Organising a charity cycle ride even if you have had fourteen years experience is never easy however, Robin and Anna Dunn and the family, friends and supporters of the Hungerford Big Wheel team have very base covered. They plan for every eventuality but just cannot control the weather. Fortunately, this year over 108 sponsored cyclists enjoyed another excellent day, the sun shone and the catering was superb. The two well-planned routes were just ideal; the 26 mile Family Fun Run through sleepy lanes and tracks to Savernake forest to the barbecue, and then back along the Kennet river was an ideal family day out. The Big Mountain Bike Ride at 33 miles was fairly challenging going up Combe Hill on off-road tracks before rejoining the family cyclists for the barbecue and a relaxed run to the finish on Hungerford Common. Newbury ATC provided marshals along the course and two volunteer paramedics very kindly turned out to ensure that if there were thrills and spills everyone was treated. Participants received medals and certificates and one lucky cyclist, as best sponsored rider, won a superb mountain bike. This year there were also a host of associated fundraising events by pupils at the local John O’Gaunt Community Technology College, Hungerford Churches Together, Charles Lucas and Marshall Solicitors and Hungerford’s own marathon runner Bill Withers, plus individual efforts with auctions, raffles and even a clay pigeon shoot. Robin Dunn who galvanises and inspires all this activity has been involved with Children in Distress for eighteen years and has been intimately involved in projects and programmes knows only too well just how much CID’s support is still needs. If this has inspired you to a challenge event or you would like to know more please contact Robin by calling 01415595690 and we will put you in touch. |
