Top StoryA ‘Diamond Geezer’ and CID’s “Roving Ambassador” honoured in this year’s Maundy Service in Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee YearEddie at a recent Thanksgiving Service Eddie Errington, CID’s Roving Ambassador Extraordinaire, as volunteer driver, charity trustee, warehouse manager, volunteer shop co-ordinator, now member of the Retail Advisory Group, has always played a significant role in the development and operation of Children in Distress. Eddie is a ‘real gentleman’ who lives his Christian conviction and commitment helping others whenever he can. Eddie was recently rendered speechless on opening a letter marked as from ‘Buckingham Palace’ when he read that he has been selected to take part in this year’s historic Maundy Service, as one of the 86 men and women who will each receive a red and white purse containing specially minted silver Maundy pennies. Eddie will be “honoured, delighted and humbled” to receive these gifts from the Queen’s own hand at the Diamond Jubilee year’s Maundy Service, which will take place at York Minister on Thursday the 5th April.
The Very Reverend Keith Brynmor Jones, Dean of York, nominated Eddie to be a recipient of Maundy Money in recognition of his work with the Church of England, he has recently retired as a Lay Reader within the church and for his work for charity primarily Children in Distress. Eddie will attend the service with Sylvia, his wife of 48 years, (they recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on Leap Year Day 29th February) and his close friend Rev Bill Ankers.
Eddie, never a man to make fuss, was initially reluctant to share with the charity and his many friends the news of this signal honour, lest it appeared that he was ‘bragging’. It took a lot of persuasion from Jane Russell before he agreed to share the news, which, with great pleasure and pride, we share with Eddie’s many friends and admirers.
All of us at Children in Distress are thrilled that Eddie will be honoured in this way and we hope that Eddie will enjoy every minute of his well deserved special day.
