Top StoryBring me Sunshine in your smilesRafael having a happy day At long last May has seen the arrival of warm weather and the chance for the children At St Margaret’s Hospice to enjoy the sun and explore the sights, sounds, scents and stimulation of the hospice sensory garden. This week brought the double bonus of Danish visitors to play with and to entertain and the children at St Margaret’s Hospice have never met anyone from Demark before. Three students Lisa, Helle and Pernille from Via University College came to complete a short internship teaching children special needs. The girls received a warm welcome from staff and children alike and the time simply flew by for everyone involved in a whole range of new play activities.
Painting was a new game that went down particularly well with young Rafael and Darius who were thrilled with their foot and handprints on beautiful white paper. The resulting masterpieces being given with love as mementos to be take back to Denmark. When face painting was tried, everyone got involved with a butterfly here, a snowdrop there and hearts painted on two exceptionally happy faces at the instance of owners Rafael and Darius
The visiting students experienced at first hand the challenges and delight of working with children with special needs and our children just thrilled to meet someone new with dedication, skill and infinite patience who over two days shared the mess, joy, fun and delight in self expression that only hand and finger painting can bring.
Seeing all the joy and excitement that this short visit generated, the staff are exceptionally grateful to these three charming students from Demark and would welcome visits from other students and volunteers interesting in working with our children. Working with children with disabilities is both rewarding and interesting and can make a significant difference to their day.
