A Story from behind the Blue Door at St Nicolas CDC

Razvan at work

This insight article offers a little glance behind the blue doors of Bucharest’s St Nicholas’s Child Development Centre.  CID Romania  shares a little of the work of one of its  best speech therapist and  the remarkable work done to change the life of  a patient with problems a little greater than most.

Alex first came to consult Razvan when he was four years old and he is now seven. He  faced a number of problems from birth, including hydrocephalus, developmental apraxia, and Gerstmann syndrome however his parents, unlike so many, didn’t give up, simply abandoning him in  long-term residential care, they fought for him, took him to doctors, worked with him, and looked to the full range of therapists.

Razvan, the CDC’s senior speech therapist, developed a range of exercises and therapies, initially showing images of letters, then words nouns, adjective, verbs, adverbs etc and then taught him the corresponding sounds. The challenge and the workload was enormous, Alex was brought conscientiously three times a week for speech therapy and twice weekly for cognitive therapy. His mother, a teacher, worked with him at home, knowing just how important parents working in harmony with the work the therapist can be.

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Razvan and the input from his parents, Alex changed from having a range of medical and profound verbal communication problems, to being a bright young lad ready to go to school in two months time. All of this, in the work of three short years. Congratulations go to Alex and even more congratulations to Razvan and Alex’s Mum and Dad who made helped with this minor miracle.
