York’s Knit’n Natter Founder, Sallie Crosby, cast off for the last time

Its over twenty-one years since Sallie Crosby of York started Sallie's Knit’n Natter, a social knitting group that encourages like-minded ladies to knit for charity.  For the last ten years Sallie's dedicated little group has hand knitted hundreds of blankets, cardigans, jumpers, hats, scarves and gloves for the infants and children cared for by Children in Distress.  Annually they display all their year's work at an Exhibition and Coffee Afternoon in the Church hall of the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Boroughbridge Road, York. This year they invited Jane Russell, the Charity’s Fundraiser in the North, to attend and accept all their beautiful knitted items, which she picked up packed and shipped to Romania just in time to keep our infants, and children warm throughout the long hard winter ahead.  This year's knitting bonanza of 35 blankets, 21 jumpers, 12 cardigans, 30 hats and 20 scarves is already packed and the boxes have been sent on the first leg of their overland journey to Romania.

We can share that in November Sallie will be celebrating a "big" birthday (she also won’t mind us sharing that she will be 80 years young!!) and she has decided it's time to cast off and lay down her knitting needles so the Coffee Afternoon 2012 was her last event.  Children in Distress would like to thank Sallie and all the members of her group for all of their hard work in helping to clothe and keep warm CID’s otherwise “forgotten”  children  and wish her a very “Happy Birthday” with many more to come.

If you would like to know more about Knit’n Natter or would like to be part of our Handcrafter’s Guild and knit to keep a child warm in the coldest days please call Jane Russell on 01751 432089
