"Love in a Box" Appeal 2012 - Southern Division

It is that time again when the hard work start generosity and kindness reigns supreme for after twenty three years CID‘s Shoebox appeal is still ensuring that the poorest children in the Balkans are not forgotten this Christmas. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of “Love in a Box” shoeboxes have brought joy and happiness to Europe’s “forgotten children”. Shoebox Appeal is almost unique in that its greatest commitment  and greatest challenge is that unlike some organisations the charity ensure that every box will be in the hands of a child before the watch night candles are even light.

This autumn, trustees Colleen & Derek Lockstone decided to encourage support CID’s “Love in a Box” appeal in their local village of Linton and the nearby villages in Cambridgeshire. They were immediately overwhelmed and delighted with the initial enthusiastic response and quickly accumulated 58 boxes. They packed and chauffeured  them down to join forces with the collection at St Peter's Church, Aldborough Hatch near Ilford, where appeal  supporters Yvonne and Ron Jeffries had gathered up a further 50 Christmas shoe boxes from their congregation.

This made a substantial pile of 108 shoe boxes filled with love and happiness for collection by a now overworked and harassed Shoebox Appeal 2012 Co-ordinator, Eddie Errington, who rolled by to take the collection to a warehouse and packaging centre generously made available  by Preston’s of Potto  for the packing, storage  and onward transport out to Romania.

The St Peters congregation are long-term supporters of Children in Distress, and some are former parishioner of St Lawrence in Barkingside where Rev John Walmsley, the founder Director of CID, first started the charity original aid collection and mission of care. These original supporters are thrilled still to be part of the Children in Distress Family after all these years.
