Alexandru, perhaps abandoned but not alone

Alexandru recovering afterhis heart operation

Since birth, life has been an uphill struggle, for little Alexandru for apart from his  Down Syndrome diagnosis, he has a whole range of related genetic complications some of which have been treated by surgical intervention but it is his chronic cardiac problems which cause the greatest concern. Complex cardiac surgery was required to deal with holes in his heart and the genetic valve malformations which led to the chronic oxygen depletion which was severely damaging his health and development.

A cardiac team at the Targu Mures Children’s Cardiology Clinic carried out an initial operation to seal the heart walls but a further emergency intervention, to fit a pacemaker, was required before he could be transferred to the Alfred Rusescu Mother and Child Protection Institute from Bucharest for high dependency care. There his condition is being closely monitored, in this very specialised infants’ cardiac unit. So far, his condition has stabilised but he will soon be driven all the way back to Targu Mures, in special ambulance provided by CID, for further tests and to monitor his progress. At the moment this doctors, nurses and surgical team are quite upbeat about his final medium term prognosis.

His young mum seems to have disappeared from the scene, but his nurse-carer from St Margaret’s is with him every day to see to his every need  and his  entire CID family await fingers crossed, only  good news of his assessment  trip back to Targu Mures.

Little Alexandru will be in need of complex intensive care for months if, you help could save or change his life for the better so please call Calum on 0141 559 5690  or  calum.mccallum@childrenindistress.org.uk for details of our Child sponsorship Programme.
