Respiratory infections result in unit isolation for St Margaret’s

Barrier nursing only one of the measures in place

For the first time since its quarantine protocol was written, St Margaret’s Hospice is now a quarantined unit. On the 15th of February, one of the children with ongoing chest problems experienced breathing difficulties, his health quickly deteriorated and as David’s symptoms were similar to acute respiratory infection he was immediately hospitalised.

Two days later, Ana Maria was experiencing similar symptoms and she was also rushed to hospital. Following a series of lab tests performed at the hospital, David was diagnosed with severe an acute viral respiratory infection and was transferred from the intensive care unit (ICU) to the pulmonary and respiratory diseases division for specific monitoring and care. Ana Maria received preventive Tamiflu treatment for the suspected same severe and acute respiratory infection.

Representatives of the Public Health District Authority visited the Saint Margaret’s Hospice and Children’s Services Centre and advised on  a range new measures to be  adopted to prevent the spread of any  infection and the centre is now in close quarantine.

So far there have been no other cases of infection amongst staff or children  and  the  source of the infection hasn’t been discovered therefore the situation is still being closely monitored by the Public Health authorities and by the General Department for Social Work and Child Protection of Sector 2.

Both David and Ana Maria who are currently hospitalised are stable and “are as well as can be expected”. Their care team wish them  well  and are anxiously awaiting their return  “home” safe and sound.
