A new air mattress for Eliseo

Eliseo relaxed and comfortable in his new matress

Eliseo has been struggling lately with several health problems and his condition doesn’t seem to improve. His level of spasticity is now quite high and the exercises performed together with the physiotherapist involve simple preventive techniques aimed at relaxing muscles and the increase the range of movement.

Each day Eliseo is moved from his bed to his padded wheelchair in order to prevent the development of pressure sores. Eliseo’s sponsors in Great Britain found out about his challenges and immediately arranged for a special air mattress that has arrived at St Andrew’s within days. Eliseo is now infinitely more comfortable and his body posture is better thanks to his sponsors’ generosity and prompt response.

The mattress was installed on its arrival, by St Andrew’s medical staff. The special mattress features an air ventilation system and a pump that can be used to increase or decrease pressure according to his weight. This decreases pressure when the child is placed on the mattress and also performs a mild massage to helps improve blood circulation at skin level and better oxygenation of tissue. The special mattress has helped tremendously to prevent the development of pressure sores and also eases the treatment of his present bed sores.
