This small community group was started in 2004, to support and fund a physiotherapist to go to St Margaret’s Hospice, Bucharest, and the other hospices, to treat and teach physiotherapy to the local therapist and care staff of Copii in Dificultate.
This dynamic little group of dedicated volunteer raise funds from a varied array, of inventive community based activities and since inception they have raised funds, not only for the travel and subsistence for Alyth Hughes, the Charity’s Consultant Physiotherapist, but also to support practical insight training for the team of young professional therapists, purchase essential therapy equipment and contribute towards therapy suites within new building projects and child development facilities.
Amongst other events held were an auction, a dinner, with speaker Kate Adie, supper talks at the Bishop of Ely’s house, coffee mornings, a sponsored walk, a ‘good as new’ sale, open gardens (yellow book) and a host of other fundraising events. Its Cookbook was a sell-out, and the group started the Charity’s quality Christmas card tradition, it has designed printed calendars and shipped to Romania box upon box of knitted woollies, hats, gloves, and scarves to say nothing of blankets of all sizes and colours as well as much needed educational toys and clothes for the children. What started as a ‘one off’ coffee morning has grown into a well known and highly regarded local charity.
For example last Christmas, the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral in Ely donated one third of the Christmas collections to support Fund a Physio, for Children in Distress.
Fund a Physio, Ely so far has funded bursaries for five young therapists to come to the UK for professional training in Paediatric therapies.
