At Children in Distress, we believe that a strong sense of identity and belonging is essential for every child’s wellbeing. The Flavours of Home program was created by REACH CIC to help children of Romanian immigrants celebrate their heritage, develop confidence, and build lasting community connections — all through the joy of food.
Flavours of Home is a vibrant after-school initiative where children gather each week to explore the rich traditions of Romanian cuisine in a fun, hands-on environment. Guided by experienced cooks and community elders, the children learn to prepare traditional dishes while hearing the stories, customs, and history that have shaped generations. Each recipe becomes a bridge between past and present — a way to honour family roots and strengthen cultural pride.
But Flavours of Home is about much more than cooking. It’s about connection, compassion, and community. The program brings families together, creating opportunities for parents, grandparents, and children to share memories and celebrate their shared heritage. These intergenerational moments not only preserve culture but also foster understanding, resilience, and hope for the future.
Through this unique blend of cultural education and practical life skills, Flavours of Home empowers children to embrace who they are and where they come from. In doing so, it strengthens the bonds within families and the wider community — helping young people grow in confidence, empathy, and self-worth.
