In Remembrance: Roy Wheeler
Dear friends,
We share today the sad news of the passing of our dear friend and long-serving volunteer, Roy Wheeler. As we pause together to honour him, we remember the incredible kindness, energy, and generosity he brought into the lives of so many children, families, colleagues, and supporters.
Roy was much more than a volunteer. He was a true face and voice of Children in Distress. Many of us will remember him most vividly through his joyful role in the Annual Christmas Shoebox Appeal, often appearing as Santa himself. He travelled tirelessly to schools, churches, and community groups, speaking with warmth and compassion, explaining the challenges faced by children in Romanian orphanages, and delivering hope through simple but powerful acts.
Whether coordinating logistics, collecting and distributing gifts, or simply being present with his trademark warmth, Roy embodied the very spirit of our mission. For many years, he helped ensure that gifts of love reached children who needed them most, making a real and lasting difference.
Roy was a cherished member of our family of volunteers, one of many who gave so much, but one whose presence and dedication were felt deeply by all who knew him.
To Roy’s family, his close friends, and everyone who worked alongside him, we extend our heartfelt condolences. We take comfort in knowing that his life touched so many and left a legacy of compassion, joy, and hope that will live on in countless ways.
With deepest sympathy and gratitude,
Anne-Marie Martin
