Children in Distress Celebrates Community Award Success in Kirkbymoorside

A wonderful evening celebrating the very best of the Kirkbymoorside community saw Children in Distress recognised for its outstanding charity shop window displays.
On Saturday 31st October 2026, Children in Distress was delighted to receive the Historic Lex Cup for the Window Dressing Competition at the Kirkbymoorside Community Awards, held at the town's Memorial Hall.
The award, donated by Kitching Walker, recognised the charity shop's fantastic Halloween window display, alongside the creativity and effort that goes into producing eye-catching displays throughout the year.
The award was presented by the Mayor of Kirkbymoorside, Councillor Joe Coughlan, on behalf of Kirkbymoorside Town Council, with a special message of appreciation:
"Kirkbymoorside Town Council is pleased to thank you for the wonderful window displays that you create throughout the year, for everyone to enjoy."
The evening was hosted by Councillor Joe Coughlan and Angus Ashworth, the well-known Yorkshire auctioneer and television presenter from The Yorkshire Auction House, and brought together individuals, volunteers, charities, community organisations and local businesses to celebrate their contributions to the town.
Simon Errington, Chief Executive Officer of Children in Distress, attended the awards alongside his wife, Jill.
Reflecting on the evening, Simon said:
"It was an absolute pleasure for Jill and I to be invited to the Kirkbymoorside Community Awards and to spend such a fantastic evening amongst so many remarkable people who contribute so much to their local community.
"To see the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm of the nominees and award winners was genuinely inspiring. It was a wonderful celebration of everything that makes a community like Kirkbymoorside so special.
"We were particularly delighted that Children in Distress received the Historic Lex Cup. Our charity shop is very much part of the local community, and this recognition means a great deal to everyone involved.
"I would especially like to thank our wonderful shop team and volunteers, whose creativity, enthusiasm and hard work make our window displays so special throughout the year. The Halloween display was clearly a winner, but it is lovely to know that the effort put into our windows all year round is appreciated by the people of Kirkbymoorside.
"My sincere thanks go to Councillor Joe Coughlan, Kirkbymoorside Town Council and everyone involved in organising such an enjoyable evening. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners. It was a privilege to be amongst you."
For Children in Distress, the award is about more than a beautifully dressed shop window. It reflects the importance of being part of a thriving local community, where volunteers, supporters and customers all play a valuable role in helping the charity continue its work supporting vulnerable children and young people.
A huge thank you to everyone in Kirkbymoorside for their continued support, and congratulations once again to Tracey Russell our fantastic shop team!
